Joint Hudson Institute & UNPO Conference Discusses Human and Political Costs of CPEC on Gilgit-Baltistan

On 5 September 2018, the Hudson Institute together with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) convened a conference in Washington, DC, on the impacts and challenges connected to the implementation of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Looking in particular at the political and human costs of the mammoth infrastructure project, panelists discussed the current situation of people in Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan and other minority-inhabited regions, while also looking on the longer-term effects CPEC might have on these areas. Hosted and moderated by Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute, Eric Brown, the event saw presentations by Prof Dr Hermann Kreutzmann, Professor of Human Geography at Freie Universität Berlin, and Husain Haqqani, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States and currently Senior Fellow at Hudson Institute. Gilgit Baltistan: Protest for the Immediate Release of Baba Jan

Locals in Gilgit Baltistan have filled the streets in demand for the immediate release of political activist Baba Jan, who remains in jail despite his recent acquittal by the Hunza Court. Imprisoned since August 2011 for raising awareness about the rights of those having been displaced following the climate-change induced landslide on the Hunza River in 2010, Baba Jan faced charges and life imprisonment. As many other activists in the region, Baba Jan was arrested for denouncing injustice and state oppression, and his detainment reflects the many human rights abuses faced by people in Gilgit Baltistan. Although other political activists’ and his case  were raised  many times before on the  international stage , the government of Pakistan continues to mistreat people under Schedule-IV of its Anti-Terrorism Act.
